"My wife and I made the trip to Portland to eat local favorites and hit coffee shops. One of the hotel staff told us that this was her favorite coffee shop so we decided to give it a try. It was just over a mile walk so we meandered up there one morning. I got a black coffee - light roast Colombian. It was very good. My palette is not as developed and nuanced as the aficionados it I spend my fair share of time in coffee shops. It was a very good, complex cup of coffee. My wife got the chai latte and was very happy with it. We didn’t order food, but they had bagels and sandwiches. They also had a lot of coffee for sale and there was a steady stream of customers buying beans and getting them ground while we were there. There are also windows out into the warehouse and roastery. Again, I have been in my share of coffee places and this one has a monumental set of coffee roasters. Really cool to look at, and the place was spotless. I grabbed a granola bar on the way out and it was great. I imagine the food was on point as well. I can see why the hotel staff recommended Coffee By Design. I will be ordering some beans and hoping to get back there when we head to that part of the country again. One last thing to note. The staff was GREAT! There was an older gentleman with a mental illness and they treated him with kindness and respect. It was obvious that he was a regular and they took time to chat with him. I am sure it made his day."
