Flat Iron Coffee Bar

"Excellent coffee. In Portland’s Arts district, this place fits the bill. True coffee shop, with the classics and nothing too trendy. My mocha was the frilliest thing on the menu. The barista knew what she was doing. This is one of the Top 5 mochas I’ve ever had. The atmosphere was low key and welcoming. I loved the flatiron shape of the building, like the New York Continental in John Wick. I enjoyed it a lot."

"Walked in on a whim upon arrival for a short 2-day trip to Portland. We were killing time before check in and in need of a pick me up. Flatiron coffee is located in a cool flatiron building. The layout was lovely with a long bar along the window and another bar along the counter. We walked to the cashier, where a simple menu with 10ish items greeted us. It was about 2:30pm so food was already gone or put away. I saw an espresso + tonic on the menu, something I've had at a few high end coffee shops before. I believe this item to be relatively unpopular, but I love the combination and am perhaps becoming a bit of a conneassuer of the concoction. I find the coffees depth and slight bitterness to be brightened and lifted by the bubbliness of the tonic. Anyhow, I asked the barista if they would recommend any syrups in the espresso and tonic and was simply SHOCKED to learn she had never tried the drink before and could offer no recommendation. I have friends "in the industry" and believed it common practice for staff at these types of establishments to sample their offerings so as to become helpful guides to the clientele. But no matter, the barista indulged my desire to experiment with a toffee nut syrup, which ended up becoming a delightful addition to a familiar combination. As we took the to the streets, drinks in hand, I was glad we'd stopped in."
